Common hot water problems we repair

Diagnosis comes first. We identify the actual fault before recommending parts, repair or replacement.

🚿

No hot water at all

We test the power, thermostat, element, gas supply, ignition components, valves and controls to identify the cause before recommending parts or replacement.

💧

Leaking hot water system

A leak may come from a valve, fitting, pipe or the storage cylinder itself. Tank leaks often require replacement, while external valves and pipework may be repairable.

🟤

Brown or discoloured hot water

Rust-coloured water can indicate internal cylinder corrosion, deteriorating components or disturbed pipework. We inspect the age and condition of the system before advising whether repair is practical.

⚠️

Relief valve leaking

A relief valve that drips constantly may be releasing excess pressure or may have failed internally. We test the valve and system pressure, then repair or replace it to Australian Standards.

Hot water runs out too quickly

The cause may be a failed heating element, incorrect thermostat operation, excessive flow, a small tank, off-peak supply issues or changing household demand.

🔥

Gas system not igniting

Pilot light, thermocouple, igniter, burner and gas control faults are common on gas storage and continuous flow systems. We diagnose the ignition sequence and repair or replace the failed component.

Should the hot water system be repaired or replaced?

Repair is usually worth considering when the system is in sound condition, the cylinder is not leaking and the failed component is replaceable. Replacement is normally the safer choice when the tank has ruptured, corrosion is advanced, repeated faults are occurring, parts are unavailable or the existing installation cannot be made compliant economically.

When repair makes sense

  • The storage cylinder is sound and not leaking
  • The failed part is replaceable — element, thermostat, valve, igniter, sensor
  • The system is under 8 to 10 years old
  • Parts are still available for the model

When replacement is the safer choice

  • The tank has ruptured or is leaking from the cylinder
  • Corrosion is advanced or faults keep recurring
  • Parts are no longer available
  • The installation cannot be made compliant economically

Repair when it makes sense

We do not recommend replacing a hot water system simply because it is old. We inspect the fault first, explain the options and recommend repair where repair is still the sensible choice. If replacement is the answer, see our hot water installations page.

Hot water system repairs Sydney — common questions

Who repairs hot water systems in Sydney?

Emergency Hot Water Repairs is a family-owned Sydney company providing hot water system repairs for gas, electric, solar, heat pump and continuous flow systems. Our plumbers are licensed, insured and experienced with all major Australian brands, and we have been repairing hot water systems across Sydney for over 40 years.

How quickly can you repair my hot water system in Sydney?

In most cases we can attend the same day you call, and many repairs are completed in a single visit because we carry common parts on the truck. For urgent no-hot-water situations, call us directly on 02 9344 6602 and we will prioritise your booking.

Why has my hot water stopped working?

Common causes include a failed heating element, faulty thermostat, pilot light or ignition issue, gas control fault, tempering valve problem, tripped electrical circuit or a leaking tank. Diagnosis comes first: we identify which component has failed before recommending parts, so you are never paying for guesswork.

Can a leaking hot water system be repaired?

Sometimes. Leaks from valves, fittings or pipework can often be repaired at reasonable cost. If the storage cylinder itself is leaking due to internal corrosion, replacement is usually required, because a rusted tank cannot be reliably sealed. We inspect the source of the leak before recommending either option.

Is it worth repairing a hot water system?

If the system is under 8 to 10 years old, the cylinder is sound and the fault is a replaceable component, repair is often worthwhile. If the system is old, badly corroded or failing repeatedly, replacement is normally the better long-term option. We explain both costs before any work begins.

How much does hot water repair cost in Sydney?

The cost depends on the system type, the fault, the parts required and whether it is a standard or emergency repair. We provide upfront pricing before starting work, so you can approve the cost first. Booking online also saves $25 on your repair.

Do you repair Rheem hot water systems?

Yes. We repair Rheem electric, gas, solar, heat pump and commercial hot water systems across Sydney, and carry common Rheem parts on our trucks. See our Rheem hot water repairs page for model-specific information, error codes and the typical Rheem faults we fix.

Do you repair Rinnai hot water systems?

Yes. We repair Rinnai continuous flow, gas storage and commercial hot water systems across Sydney, including common ignition, flow, temperature and control faults. Rinnai error codes can usually be diagnosed quickly — note the code on the display when you call and we will arrive prepared. More on our Rinnai repairs page.

Do you repair both gas and electric hot water systems?

Yes. Our licensed plumbers and gasfitters repair gas, electric, solar, heat pump and continuous flow hot water systems throughout Sydney. Whatever fuel type your system uses, we diagnose the fault, explain the options and carry out the repair — usually on the same day you call.

My hot water system is leaking. Is this an emergency?

Yes, treat it as one. A leaking hot water system can cause water damage and may be a sign of internal tank failure. Turn off the cold water supply at the isolation valve on the unit, turn off the power or gas, and call us immediately on 02 9344 6602.

Need an answer today?

Call 02 9344 6602 for immediate advice or book online. Tell us the brand, system type, approximate age and what the heater is doing. A clear photo of the unit and data plate can also help us prepare for the visit.
