Storage or Continuous Flow —
We Handle Both
Gas hot water systems come in two main types, plus LPG for homes without mains gas. We repair, service and install all of them across the Eastern Suburbs — continuous flow units from Rinnai, Bosch and Rheem, and gas storage tanks in natural gas and LPG configurations.
Keeping Sydney's showers hot for over 40 years.
Gas hot water systems: lifespan & system type
For over 40 years, Emergency Hot Water Repairs has repaired, serviced and installed gas hot water systems throughout Sydney's Eastern Suburbs — storage and continuous flow, natural gas and LPG.
💡 How long should my gas hot water system last?
Continuous flow units typically last 15 to 20 years with proper servicing, while gas storage tanks usually last 10 to 12 years. On storage systems, the sacrificial anode should be checked every 5 years to protect the tank from corrosion.
Continuous flow vs gas storage
Continuous flow (instantaneous) systems heat water on demand — no tank, no standby heat loss — which makes them especially efficient to run. Gas storage tanks heat and store a large volume of water ready to use, a reliable and cost-effective option for larger households. Not connected to mains gas? LPG systems are ideal for properties without natural gas supply.
Our experience
Fluctuating temperatures from a continuous flow unit often point to a dirty inlet filter or a failing thermistor — both quick fixes. Many homeowners assume the whole unit has failed when a single inexpensive component is the real culprit. We diagnose the exact fault rather than guessing.
Because gas is involved, every repair and installation must be carried out by a licensed gas fitter and certified to Australian Standards. We test for leaks and certify the work before we leave — no exceptions.

Common gas hot water system failures
Once you know the system type, the next step is working out whether the fault is repairable. These are the gas hot water problems we see most often across Sydney homes.
1. Pilot Light & Thermocouple Faults
Common Symptoms
Pilot light won't stay lit, goes out repeatedly, or won't ignite at all.
What's Usually Behind It
Usually a failed thermocouple or a blocked pilot tube. We carry replacement parts for all major brands and fix it on the spot.
2. Continuous Flow Won't Fire Up
Common Symptoms
No hot water at all from an instantaneous unit, or an error code on the display.
What's Usually Behind It
Could be a faulty flow sensor, gas valve, igniter or PC board. We diagnose the exact fault rather than guessing.
3. Low Gas Pressure
Common Symptoms
The unit cuts out mid-shower or struggles to keep up when more than one tap is running.
What's Usually Behind It
Insufficient gas pressure at the inlet. We test inlet pressure and adjust or replace the regulator.
4. Flue & Ventilation Issues
Common Symptoms
Sooting around the unit, unusual smells, or the unit shutting itself down.
Important
A blocked or damaged flue is a safety hazard. We inspect, clear and repair flue systems to Australian Standards.
5. Leaking Gas Storage Tank
Common Symptoms
Water pooling under the tank, rust around the base, or a constantly dripping relief valve.
What's Usually Behind It
Tanks corrode from the inside out over time. We assess whether a repair is viable or recommend a cost-effective replacement.
6. Inconsistent Water Temperature
Common Symptoms
Water swings between hot and cold, or never quite reaches temperature.
What's Usually Behind It
Fluctuating temperatures from a continuous flow unit often point to a dirty inlet filter or failing thermistor — both quick fixes.
7. Tempering Valve Problems
Common Symptoms
Lukewarm water, sudden temperature fluctuations, reduced hot water flow or different temperatures at different taps.
Tip
Many homeowners think the hot water system has failed when the real problem is a faulty tempering valve. We check it during every diagnosis.
Repair or replace?
Not every faulty gas system needs replacing. Thermocouples, gas valves, flow sensors, igniters and tempering valves can often be repaired at a fraction of the cost of a new system.
However, if a storage tank has rusted through and is leaking, a replacement and new installation is generally the only practical option. We supply and install leading gas brands with same-day availability on most units — we'll remove your old system, install and test the new one, and leave you with full warranty documentation.
Repair when it makes sense
At Emergency Hot Water Repairs, we do not recommend replacing a hot water system simply because it is old. We inspect the fault first, explain the options and recommend repair where repair is still the sensible choice.

Gas hot water — common questions
Is gas hot water cheaper to run than electric?
Generally yes — natural gas is typically cheaper per unit of energy than electricity in NSW. Continuous flow gas systems are especially efficient as they only heat water when you need it, with no standby losses.
Can you work on LPG as well as natural gas?
Yes, we service and install both natural gas and LPG systems. If you're on LPG we'll make sure the unit is correctly set up for your gas type.
My continuous flow unit cuts out mid-shower — what's wrong?
This is usually caused by low gas pressure, a dirty inlet filter, a faulty flow sensor or an overheating unit. We'll diagnose the exact cause on site.
How long does a gas hot water system last?
Continuous flow units typically last 15–20 years with proper servicing. Gas storage tanks usually last 10–12 years. The sacrificial anode should be checked every 5 years to protect the tank.
Do I need a licensed plumber for gas work?
Yes — all gas work in NSW must be carried out by a licensed gas fitter. Our plumbers hold the relevant licences and all work is certified to Australian Standards.
