Why We're the Stiebel Eltron
Specialists Sydney Calls On
Stiebel Eltron is a German-engineered electric hot water brand. We repair and replace the two 3-phase instantaneous models we see most in Sydney homes: the DHF 13 C and the DEL 13 Plus.
German engineered. Direct replacements for old 20A 3-phase units.
Stiebel Eltron 3-phase units: lifespan & how they work
For over 40 years, Emergency Hot Water Repairs has repaired, serviced and installed Stiebel Eltron hot water systems throughout Sydney.
💡 How long should my Stiebel Eltron hot water system last?
The answer depends on the type of system, installation quality, maintenance, water conditions and household hot water usage.
Average lifespan of a Stiebel Eltron hot water system
| Stiebel Eltron System Type | Typical Lifespan |
|---|---|
| 3-Phase Instantaneous (DHF / DEL Plus) | 10 to 20 years |
These are average lifespans. Some systems fail earlier due to poor installation or neglected maintenance, while a well-maintained unit can last much longer.
Our experience
We have replaced Stiebel Eltron systems that failed after seven or eight years, and we have also seen well-maintained Stiebel Eltron units still working after more than 20 years. The difference is usually installation quality, water conditions and whether the system has been looked after.
DHF 13 C vs DEL 13 Plus: Which Stiebel Eltron Do You Have?
We work on two Stiebel Eltron 3-phase instantaneous models, both direct replacements for older 20A 3-phase electric water heaters: the DHF 13 C, a hydraulically controlled unit with a simple dial, and the DEL 13 Plus, an electronically controlled unit with a digital display. Neither has a storage tank — both heat water on demand as it flows through.
DHF 13 C
A mechanical, hydraulically controlled unit with a two-stage temperature dial. Simple and reliable, but can be affected by fluctuating water pressure if paired with modern water-saving tapware.
- 19.7A per phase, 14.2kW
- Two-stage dial control
- 5-year domestic warranty*
DEL 13 Plus
An electronically controlled unit with 3i Technology, delivering precise temperatures up to 50°C with no tempering valve required. Made in Germany.
- 20A per phase, 14.5kW
- Digital display, ECO mode
- Compatible with preheated (solar) water
Both models require 20A per phase on a 3-phase supply and are compact enough to install under a sink, in a cupboard or service cavity — no tank, flue or ventilation required.
Our experience
Across Sydney, we replace a lot of ageing 3-phase instantaneous heaters with the DHF 13 C or DEL 13 Plus, matching the model to the amperage of the old unit. Your electrician or our technicians can confirm the amps per phase on your existing unit to identify the correct replacement.

Common Stiebel Eltron hot water system failures
Once you know the system type, the next step is working out whether the fault is repairable. These are the Stiebel Eltron problems we see most often across Sydney homes.
1. Heating Element Failure
Common Symptoms
No hot water, lukewarm water, or the circuit breaker tripping when the unit is used.
How to Help Prevent It
Have the element and connections inspected during regular servicing, especially in hard water areas where scale builds up faster.
Important
The heating element is the most common failure point on both the DHF 13 C and DEL 13 Plus.
2. DHF Hydraulic Control Valve Fault
Common Symptoms
Unit won't switch on despite water flowing, or output stays on the same temperature setting regardless of the dial position.
How to Help Prevent It
Avoid pairing the DHF with very low-flow tapware or shower roses, which can prevent the hydraulic valve from triggering properly.
3. DEL Plus Display or Electronic Fault
Common Symptoms
Blank or flickering display, error codes, or the unit not responding to temperature adjustments.
How to Help Prevent It
Keep the unit's electrical connections dry and have the control electronics checked if error codes appear repeatedly.
4. Temperature Fluctuations
Common Symptoms
Water running hot then cold mid-shower, especially when other taps are used at the same time.
How to Help Prevent It
Make sure incoming water flow meets the unit's minimum switch-on rate, and avoid running multiple outlets from one unit at once.
5. Terminal & Wiring Faults
Common Symptoms
Intermittent operation, tripped circuit breaker, or a burning smell near the unit.
How to Help Prevent It
Have terminal connections checked periodically — loose 3-phase connections are a common cause of intermittent faults.
Important
Wiring faults should only be inspected and repaired by a licensed electrician or plumber.
6. Tripped Circuit Breaker
Common Symptoms
No hot water at all, with the circuit breaker for the unit found tripped at the switchboard.
How to Help Prevent It
Don't just reset the breaker and ignore it — a repeat trip usually means an element or wiring fault that needs diagnosing.
7. Scale Buildup on the Element
Common Symptoms
Reduced output temperature, longer heat-up time, or unusual noise from the unit.
How to Help Prevent It
In hard water areas, have the element checked and descaled periodically as part of regular servicing.
8. Unit Not Suitable for the Installation
Common Symptoms
Fluctuating temperature when installed with modern water-saving tapware or shower roses.
How to Help Prevent It
The hydraulically controlled DHF is best suited to like-for-like replacement of an existing unit. For new installations or water-saving fixtures, the electronically controlled DEL Plus is generally the better fit.
9. Water Quality
Common Symptoms
Shorter element life, discoloured water, or reduced performance over time.
How to Help Prevent It
Install the correct model for your water conditions and have the unit serviced regularly.
Repair or replace?
Not every older Stiebel Eltron needs replacing. Heating elements, hydraulic or electronic control valves, thermostats, terminals and wiring can often be repaired at a fraction of the cost of a new system.
However, if the heating element or control valve has failed beyond repair, a replacement and new installation is generally the only practical option. We supply and install all current Stiebel Eltron models with same-week availability on most units — we'll remove your old system, install and test the new one, and leave you with full warranty documentation.
Repair when it makes sense
At Emergency Hot Water Repairs, we do not recommend replacing a hot water system simply because it is old. We inspect the fault first, explain the options and recommend repair where repair is still the sensible choice.

Stiebel Eltron hot water — common questions
Why has my Stiebel Eltron hot water system stopped working?
Stiebel Eltron systems can stop working due to a failed heating element, a tripped circuit breaker, a faulty hydraulic or electronic control valve, or a wiring fault. Our technicians carry the most common Stiebel Eltron parts and can usually diagnose and fix the issue in a single visit. Call us on 02 9344 6602 — we're available 24/7.
What do Stiebel Eltron error codes mean?
The DEL Plus displays fault codes on its digital display to indicate specific problems — for example, water flow issues, temperature sensor faults, or electrical faults. Our technicians are trained on Stiebel Eltron diagnostics and can read and resolve these codes quickly. Note the code showing on your display when you call us to speed up diagnosis.
How long do Stiebel Eltron hot water systems last?
A well-maintained Stiebel Eltron 3-phase instantaneous unit typically lasts 10 to 20 years with regular servicing. If your system is nearing this age and developing faults, replacement is usually more cost-effective than ongoing repairs. We'll always give you an honest assessment.
Is my Stiebel Eltron system still under warranty?
The DHF 13 C carries a 5-year domestic warranty (conditions apply). Warranty terms for the DEL Plus vary — check your paperwork or contact Stiebel Eltron directly to confirm what's covered. Using a licensed plumber for all repairs and servicing is required to keep your warranty valid, and we can provide documentation if needed.
How quickly can you repair my Stiebel Eltron system in the Eastern Suburbs?
We're based in Kingsford and aim to reach most Eastern Suburbs locations within the hour. Emergency call-outs are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week across Bondi, Randwick, Maroubra, Coogee and all surrounding suburbs.
