Why We're the Servgas Specialists
Sydney Calls On
Servgas is an Australian gas hot water brand best known for its AQUA POWERED balanced flue continuous flow system, which runs on natural gas. We've been repairing and installing Servgas systems for more than 40 years, so whether it's a pilot light fault or a full unit replacement, we know exactly what we're working with.
A trusted name in Sydney hot water for decades.
Servgas AQUA POWERED system: lifespan & how it works
For over 40 years, Emergency Hot Water Repairs has repaired, serviced and installed Servgas hot water systems throughout Sydney.
💡 How long should my Servgas hot water system last?
The answer depends on the type of system, installation quality, maintenance, water conditions and household hot water usage.
Average lifespan of a Servgas hot water system
| Servgas System Type | Typical Lifespan |
|---|---|
| AQUA POWERED Balanced Flue Continuous Flow | 15 to 20 years |
These are average lifespans. Some systems fail earlier due to poor installation or neglected maintenance, while a well-maintained unit can last much longer.
Our experience
We have replaced Servgas systems that failed after seven or eight years, and we have also seen well-maintained Servgas units still working after more than 20 years. The difference is usually installation quality, water conditions and whether the system has been looked after.
How the Servgas AQUA POWERED System Works
Servgas makes one style of system: the AQUA POWERED internal balanced flue continuous flow unit. There's no storage tank — it heats water on demand as it flows through, so there's no standing water to run out and no energy wasted keeping a tank hot. It runs on natural gas only.
Designed for Tight Spaces
Compact and fully sealed, the AQUA POWERED unit is designed to be installed internally — including inside a kitchen cupboard — making it well suited to apartments and multi-storey buildings.
- No tank — heats on demand
- Single-knob temperature control, 30°C to 75°C
- Delivers hot water 24/7 with no wasted standby energy
Common Faults
Because ignition depends on water flow spinning the turbine, most faults relate to the ignition spark, gas valve, burner or flue seal rather than a tank.
- Turbine or spark ignition faults
- Flue blockage or seal issues
- Gas valve or burner faults
Our experience
Across Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, we regularly service Servgas AQUA POWERED units, many installed inside kitchen cupboards exactly as they were designed for. A well-maintained unit doesn't need replacing just because it's getting on in years.

Common Servgas hot water system failures
Once you know the system type, the next step is working out whether the fault is repairable. These are the Servgas problems we see most often across Sydney homes.
1. Turbine or Ignition Spark Failure
Common Symptoms
No spark when the tap is turned on, water running but no hot water, or the unit failing to fire up.
How to Help Prevent It
Keep water pressure and flow within the unit's specified range, and have the turbine and ignition assembly inspected during regular servicing.
Important
Because ignition relies on water flow spinning the turbine, low water pressure is a common cause of no-ignition faults.
2. Flue Blockage or Sealing Fault
Common Symptoms
Unit shutting down, error codes, or a gas smell near the unit.
How to Help Prevent It
Keep the flue terminal clear of debris and nesting, and have the room seal checked during regular servicing.
3. Flue & Ventilation Blockage
Common Symptoms
Unit shutting down, error codes, sooty marks around the flue, or a gas smell near the unit.
How to Help Prevent It
Keep the flue and surrounding vents clear of debris, leaves and nesting, and have gas connections checked regularly.
4. Thermostat Failure
Common Symptoms
No hot water at all, water not hot enough, water too hot, inconsistent temperature or hot water running out sooner than normal.
How to Help Prevent It
Have the thermostat tested if water temperature changes. Never bypass a thermostat, as it is an essential safety device.
5. Pressure Relief Valve Failure
Common Symptoms
Constant dripping from the overflow pipe, water running from the relief valve, increased water bills or reduced efficiency.
How to Help Prevent It
Replace leaking valves promptly and have the valve checked during servicing.
6. Gas Burner & Ignition Problems
Common Symptoms
No hot water, pilot light will not stay lit, delayed ignition, burner will not ignite or error codes.
How to Help Prevent It
Service gas appliances regularly, keep the heater area clean and repair ignition problems early.
7. Continuous Flow Faults
Common Symptoms
Error codes, unit shutting down, intermittent hot water or temperature fluctuations.
How to Help Prevent It
Keep filters and air intakes clean. Have recurring error codes professionally diagnosed.
8. Water Quality
Common Symptoms
Shorter system life, corrosion, noisy operation, poor performance or premature component failure.
How to Help Prevent It
Install the correct system for local water conditions and service it regularly.
9. Tempering Valve Problems
Common Symptoms
Lukewarm water, sudden temperature fluctuations, reduced hot water flow, hot water running out quickly or different temperatures at different taps.
How to Help Prevent It
Have the tempering valve checked during servicing and replace worn or faulty valves.
Tip
Many homeowners think the hot water system has failed when the real problem is a faulty tempering valve.
Repair or replace?
Not every older Servgas needs replacing. Thermostats, gas valves, burners, igniters, fans, sensors, pressure relief valves and tempering valves can often be repaired at a fraction of the cost of a new system.
However, if the heat exchanger has failed or the unit is leaking internally, a replacement and new installation is generally the only practical option. We supply and install all current Servgas models with same-week availability on most units — we'll remove your old system, install and test the new one, and leave you with full warranty documentation.
Repair when it makes sense
At Emergency Hot Water Repairs, we do not recommend replacing a hot water system simply because it is old. We inspect the fault first, explain the options and recommend repair where repair is still the sensible choice.

Servgas hot water — common questions
Why has my Servgas hot water system stopped working?
Servgas systems can stop working due to thermostat failure, pilot light or ignition faults, gas supply issues, sediment buildup, or a faulty pressure relief valve. Our technicians carry the most common Servgas parts and can usually diagnose and fix the issue in a single visit. Call us on 02 9344 6602 — we're available 24/7.
What do Servgas error codes mean?
Servgas continuous flow systems display fault codes to indicate specific problems — for example, ignition failure (code 11), water flow issues, or gas pressure faults. Our technicians are trained on Servgas diagnostics and can read and resolve these codes quickly. Note the code showing on your display when you call us to speed up diagnosis.
How long do Servgas hot water systems last?
A well-maintained Servgas AQUA POWERED unit typically lasts 15 to 20 years with regular servicing. If your system is nearing this age and developing faults, replacement is usually more cost-effective than ongoing repairs. We'll always give you an honest assessment.
Is my Servgas system still under warranty?
Servgas warranty terms vary by model and installation date — check your paperwork or contact the manufacturer to confirm what's covered. Using a licensed plumber for all repairs and servicing is required to keep your warranty valid. We use warranty-friendly diagnostics and quality compatible parts, and can provide documentation if needed.

We're based in Kingsford and aim to reach most Eastern Suburbs locations within the hour. Emergency call-outs are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week across Bondi, Randwick, Maroubra, Coogee and all surrounding suburbs.
