Solar System Types

Highline or Lowline — We Service Both

Solar hot water systems come in two main configurations. Understanding which type you have helps us diagnose problems faster.

Common in Older Homes

☀️ Highline (Thermosiphon)

The storage tank sits on the roof directly above the solar collectors. Hot water rises naturally — no pump needed. Simple and reliable, but the tank is exposed to the elements and can corrode over time.

Modern Standard

🏠 Lowline (Split System)

The tank is on the ground and a circulation pump moves water between the tank and roof collectors. More complex but easier to access for servicing, and the tank is protected from weather.

🌡️ Evacuated Tube Collectors

Glass vacuum tubes that absorb heat more efficiently than flat panels, especially on cooler or overcast days. Individual tubes can be replaced without removing the whole collector array.

Common Solar Faults

Solar Hot Water Problems We Fix

Solar systems have more components than standard systems — more to go wrong, but most faults are straightforward to fix.

🔌

Booster Not Working

The electric or gas booster keeps you in hot water on cloudy days. A failed booster element or thermostat leaves you cold — we replace them on the spot.

💧

Leaking Collectors or Tank

Roof-mounted tanks and collectors are exposed to UV and weather. We inspect, reseal or replace corroded components and worn collector connections.

⚙️

Circulation Pump Failure

On lowline systems, a failed pump means cold water sits in the collectors and never reaches the tank. We test, replace and prime the pump on the same visit.

🖥️

Controller or Sensor Faults

The differential controller compares roof and tank temperatures to decide when to run the pump. A faulty sensor or controller causes the system to run at the wrong times — or not at all.

🧪

Frost Protection Issues

Some systems use a glycol loop to protect collectors from freezing. Degraded glycol stops protecting the system — we test fluid condition and replace when needed.

☀️

Broken Evacuated Tubes

Individual glass tubes crack over time. A cracked tube reduces efficiency significantly. We replace individual tubes without disturbing the rest of the array.

The Process

How We Work

Solar systems need someone who understands the whole system — collectors, pump, controller and booster. That's what we bring.

Call or Book Online

Phone 02 9344 6602 or book online. Tell us what's happening and we'll come prepared with the right parts.

Full System Check

We inspect the collectors, pump, controller, sensors, booster and tank — not just the obvious fault. You get an upfront quote before we start.

Repair on the Spot

Most solar repairs are completed in one visit. We carry common parts for all major brands in the van.

System Verified

We confirm the system is circulating correctly and the booster is operational before we leave. No half-fixes.

FAQ

Solar Hot Water Questions

Why am I getting cold water even though I have solar?

The most common reasons are a failed booster element, a faulty circulation pump, a broken controller or a period of overcast weather with no boost backup. We'll work through each cause on site.

What's the difference between highline and lowline solar?

Highline systems have the tank on the roof — water circulates by gravity with no pump. Lowline systems have the tank on the ground and use a pump to circulate water. Lowline systems are easier to maintain but have more components that can fail.

Can you replace just one evacuated tube?

Yes — individual tubes can be replaced without removing the whole collector. We carry common tube sizes in the van for most brands.

How often should a solar hot water system be serviced?

We recommend a check every 3–5 years — inspecting the anode, pump, collector connections and controller settings. Regular servicing catches small issues before they become expensive ones.

My solar system is old — is it worth repairing or should I replace it?

If the collectors are in good condition and it's just a booster or pump issue, repair is almost always the better value. If the tank is corroding or the collectors are badly degraded, we'll give you an honest assessment on whether replacement makes more sense.
